Advantages of the Paste-Mate vs. Other Machines
- It has a deeper trough to hold the paste for fewer stops to refill. It has more rollers to handle paste will allow you to use a variety of paste without having to thin it down too much. (Machines with fewer rollers tend to have skips and will not allow you to reach the bottom of the trough, so you would have to stop to top off the paste on these machines)
- This machine has 3 rollers. The bottom pickup roller will pick up 98% of the paste to the bottom of the trough which saves time refilling the machine. It works with the paste roller to bring the paste evenly up and by the adjustment roller. This process will utilize the best paste application for many paste choices.
- All these features above allow you to pull anywhere from 30-50 yards of material depending on what you are pulling and the thickness of the paste application you have adjusted for that material. More time spent at the machine without having to reload your paste allows you to be productive at the wall rather than fiddling with the machine.
- The area where you load your bolts is in front of the machine. This front loading gives you free access to get up and under the bolt you are loading to save your back. Other machines that load directly under the machine, are a strain on your body to load. The front-loading access of the Paste-Mate is a great advantage over other machines.
- The Booking Table gives you an area to fold and support your material as you pull and book. This helps to keep your material dean and folded without touching the ground.
- There are several rolling stand height adjustments, to allow you to fit the height of the person pulling the material. This allows for comfort and less fatigue on the body.
Pro Tips for the Paste-Mate
- When you are adjusting the thickness of paste application always adjust each side of the adjustment bar evenly.
- Stop after pulling about 2′ of the material through the machine to run your finger through the freshly applied paste. Check to see if it is the amount of paste you prefer. Adjust the sides evenly and check it again. Once you set it to the preferred adjustment to the job there is usually no need to have to test again for that installation job.
- Adhesive can be left in the machine for several days if you clean off any paste on the top of the rollers to where the paste touches the rollers. Lay thin plastic over the rollers and into the paste. Put wet microfiber towels or a designated large towel over the plastic. You can put another layer of plastic and cover it all with a blanket or drop cloth. This keeps the air out and allows you to start with a fresh machine the next morning. If you take care of the machine, it will take care of you. Never leave paste in your machine between jobs to where paste is just sitting and air might get to it. Leaving it sitting in paste too long will deteriorate rollers over time.
Adhesive Tips
- I use Roman Products Wallcovering Adhesives.
- 234 Premium Grade can be shaken or whipped and will pull through
- 774 Strippable Clay can be whipped up and will pull through.
- Sometimes depending on humidity or the thickness of the paste batch you may have to add a cup or two of water to a 5 to make it smooth and pourable. But many times, it will pull through with just whipping up the paste to where it is smooth.
- 838 Heavy Duty can be whipped to a thin consistency 880 Ultra Clear & 780 Heavy Duty are pourable as is.
- The only one I haven’t pulled through would be 111 Heavy Duty clay, it is designed to be hand applied.
Basswood Pasting Tables Advantages:
- The self-healing properties of Basswood will selfheal after multiple cuts allowing for true table trimming.
- PRO TIP: NEVER crosscut on a table. Only cut with the grain.
To Seal or Not to Seal
Some people prefer to have no finish on their tables. Others like to take the time to prepare the tables for easier cleaning of any paste residue that may accidentally get on the table. Products that some professionals love to use as a finish is Thompson’s Water Seal (water base one only), Danish Wood oil, or Tung oil. You want to keep the sealing properties of the wood and only seal enough for easy cleaning.
Pro tips
- A lot of installers will mark the inches on their inner board by inches for fast measuring. (1-72 inches or however long your table is.) The tables come in different lengths and widths to fit each installer’s preference. The length and weight of the tables allow you to buy what suits your needs, but marking the inner board allows for fast measuring the lengths of your drops. In other words, if you have a 72-inch table and need 144″ you can quickly unroll the paper twice across the length and have 144″ If you need a 100″ length you would unroll to the 72″ , make a pencil mark, go back to the beginning and unroll to the 28″ mark to get your 100 inches.
- The pull-down metal straight edge holder keeps your straight edge handy for table trimming.
- You may want to add blue tape to the bottom of your straight edge to add grip to the straight edge if you have slick material you are trimming. Or add the tape to the ends only for grip and protection from scratching. Some use a narrow self-adhesive foam tape for the purpose of grip.
